A disturbing statistic: A woman dies of heart disease in the U.S. almost every minute. Robert Bonow, MD, is former chief of Cardiology and current director of the Center for Cardiovascular Innovation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The center is dedicated to improving the quality of health care provided to people with heart disease, an area that consumes $574 billion annually in health care resources in the U.S. “We know what medicines work, what procedures should be done and yet we tend to fall short,” says Dr. Bonow, a past president for the American Heart Association and professor of medicine at Northwestern University. “Unlike other areas of medicine, heart disease has drugs that work.
