Midwest SGIM Meeting and Awards

The Midwest Region of the Society of General Internal Medicine recently held its annual meeting at Navy Pier. Northwestern had a very strong performance and won a number of awards.

Heather Heiman, MD received the Society of General Internal Medicine's Clinical Educator Award for the Midwest Region. Presenting the award to her is Andy Anderson, MD, of Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee and president of the Midwest Region SGIM for 2011-2012. Dr. Anderson is a former Northwestern faculty member.

Dr. Heiman is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Divsion of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. Dr. Heiman is a medical co-director of the Clinical Education Center. She also directs the Remediation Task Force for the Feinberg School of Medicine. She helps medical students learn history-taking and physical exam skills, develops clinical skills assessments, and mentors fourth-year medical students teaching in the CEC. She is a primary care physician and works with medical students and residents in her outpatient internal medicine clinic. Read more about Dr. Heiman here.

 

 

Allison Lyons, MD, et al submission "Progress Toward Ensuring Clinical Competence of Medical School Graduates via a Boot Camp Curriculum" was selected as Best Research Abstract. Her co-authors on this project are Diane Wayne, Elaine Cohen, Ben Singer, and Bill McGahie. Dr. Lyons also presented this at the meeting's opening plenary session.

Dr. Lyons graduated from the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Northestern residency program and is currently a Chief Medical Resident. Following her chief year, she plans a career in primary care medicine.
