David D. McPherson, MD

Dr. David D. McPherson is the Co-Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory, Northwestern Memorial Hospital; Director, Research Cardiology; and Professor of Medicine at Feinberg School of Medicine.

He was trained at the University of Alberta and Dalhousie University prior to his tenure at the University of Iowa as a researcher and, subsequently, staff attending in Cardiology. He came to Northwestern University in 1989 to develop an ultrasound based imaging group. He is the recipient of many distinctions, awards and grants for the development and use of new and innovative ultrasound tools and devices for the evaluation and treatment of atherosclerosis in coronary and peripheral vascular beds. These include the National Institutes of Health and American Heart Association awards. He is a reviewer for many journals including Circulation, Circulation Research, and the American Journal of Physiology; is on the editorial board of the American Journal of Physiology; is a grant reviewer/grant review co-chairman for the National Institutes of Health, and the American Heart Association; and is a member of the American Society of Echocardiography, American Federation for Clinical Research and American Heart Association, councils and committees. He is a supervisor for biomedical engineering masters and doctoral students, cardiology fellows, residents, and medical students training in advanced echocardiographic research. In addition to being the senior author on many manuscripts evaluating atheroma and cardiovascular dynamics, he is the co-editor of a textbook, "Non-invasive imaging of atherosclerosis. "

Clinical interests include, the evaluation of valvular heart disease, adult congenital cardiology, and clinical echocardiography including transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). He is responsible for a large advanced TEE training course for the Midwest. He is also the co-director of Echo Northwestern, a clinical echocardiographic training course held yearly by Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Current research projects include; arterial (coronary and vascular) imaging and the determination of the physiologic importance of atherosclerosis with new ultrasonic and image processing techniques; the evaluation of new acoustic agents for ultrasound tissue enhancement and treatment; the development of new acoustic techniques to guide angioplasty and stent placement; and the use of new three dimensional volumetric techniques for cardiac and vascular reconstruction.

Dr. McPherson is the author of 73 manuscripts, 186 abstracts, 19 book chapters, 12 review articles, 5 editorials, and is the editor of a book.
