Fellowship

The Division of General Internal Medicine strongly encourages and supports individuals interested in research training to pursue an academic career.  There are three pathways.  The first is the Northwestern University Health Services Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship.  The fellowship is directed by the Institute for Healthcare Studies, which is situated adjacent to the Division of General Internal.  This fellowship provides both didactic training leading to a master’s degree in public health or health services research as well as intensive, mentored research training.  Faculty from the Division of General Internal Medicine are very actively involved in this fellowship program, both teaching courses and mentoring fellows.

The second pathway is the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Vascular Medicine training program. This training program is for individuals who desire to be clinician-investigators in the field of vascular medicine, and the program prepares trainees to become national leaders in vascular medicine as practitioners, clinical investigators, and educators.  It is co-directed by Dr. Mary McDermott, Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine.

The third pathway is a customized program in areas such as clinical epidemiology or medical education.  Fellows can take course work through one of the many master’s degree programs and complete a mentored research project over two years.  Interested individuals should contact Dr. David Baker, Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine.
