General Internal Medicine - News and Announcements

Diane B. Wayne, MD, Associate Professor, Division of General Internal Medicine, was recently named the Vice Chair, Education Department of Medicine 2009.  She was also recently elected Fellow in the Institute of Medicine, Chicago.  Dr. Wayne is currently serve as the internal medicine residency program director for the Department of Medicine. Her research interests include procedural training of internal medicine residents, ambulatory medical education and clinical skills assessments.  She has also been selected to receive the 2010 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Wayne is the first professor from Northwestern to win this award and one of 10 award recipients among a national pool of program directors from all specialties.

Congratulations to James Foody, MD, Governor for the ACP's Illinois Northern Chapter.  Dr. Foody is in his second year of a four-year term as Governor of the American College of Physicians Illinois Northern Chapter.  He was also named the national ACP's Vice Chairman of the Membership Committee.

The Peripheral Arterial Disease Coalition has selected Mary McDermott, MD, Professor, Division of General Internal Medicine, the Coalition’s 2009 Best Research Award (category:Vascular Medicine) for her article, “Asymptomatic Peripheral Arterial Disease Is Associated With More Adverse Lower Extremity Characteristics Than Intermittent Claudication.”  The PAD Coalition created this award to reward the work of investigators and acknowledge the creation of new clinical research that is relevant to the understanding and/or treatment of peripheral arterial disease.  To qualify for this award, articles must have been published during 2008.  A multidisciplinary committee selected the award from qualifying research articles published in peer-reviewed literature. The award, will be announced at the P.A.D. Coalition’s Annual Meeting being held the evening of September 16, 2009 in Washington, DC.  Dr. McDermott has also recently received a grant award from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, R01HL083064: Blood Markers of Vulnerability in High Risk Vascular Patients.  This four year award is for approximately two million dollars in direct funds. 

Marla Clayman, PhD MPH was elected as Councilor for the American Public Health Association's Public Health Education & Health Promotion Section.

Lenore Soglin, MD, Assistant Professor, Division of General Internal Medicine, is a recipient of multiple recent awards/grants including: NMFF Community Service Award, Volunteer of the Year for Apna Ghar, Language Line Grant for shelter translating, Dept of Medicine teaching award.
