Compensation and Benefits

Fellows may attend one scientific meeting per year. Funding for travel to additional meetings may be available for fellows who are invited to present their research.

A robust package of health insurance and other benefits, such as felxible spending accounts, life insurance, and retirement savings plans, are offered to all trainees. The follwing information taken from our GME web site is a summary of the paid time-off opportunites available and annual stipend levels for the 2008 academic year.

Paid time off opportunities include:

  • 15 paid vacation days
  • 10 paid routine sick days
  • 90 paid short-term disability (STD) days
  • 6 weeks for birth of a child (combination of sick and STD at 80%)
  • * see FMLA

UnPaid time off opportunities include:

  • Family Medical Leave Act
  • Leave of absence

Vacation Policy

Each housestaff receives three weeks (15 working days) of paid vacation per year. Vacations should be taken in segments of not less than one week. Vacation time not taken during one year of training cannot be accrued and carried over to the following year of training. Stipend payment is not made in lieu of vacation time not taken.

Vacations should be scheduled and approved by the program director. Vacation dates in late June or early July should be avoided. Terminal vacations - that is, vacations taken at the conclusion of one's program to hasten the date of program completion - require written approval of the program director and the associate dean.

Sick Policy

Each Housestaff is allowed two weeks (10 working days) of paid sick leave per appointment year. The use of sick days is for the sickness or injury of the McGaw Housestaff only - not for use as additional vacation days or for caring for sick or injured family members. All absences due to sickness or injury must be reported promptly to your program coordinator.

If a Housestaff member finds that more than 10 days of routine sick days are necessary, then short-term disability will need to be used and physician certification provided as verification of the illness or injury. McGaw Payroll & Benefits (888-449-0016) AND your program coordinator must be notified for sick days exceeding 10 days in a program year.

Holidays

McGaw offers no paid holidays. The stipend is earned for the holiday regardless of whether or not the housestaff has been scheduled to work on that day.

The following are the annual stipend levels for 7/1/08-6/30/09:

PGY 4 $54, 774
