Associate Professor of Medicine
Chief, Division of Hepatology

The Division of Hepatology is committed to providing exceptional clinical care, as well as promoting state-of-the-art research in both clinical and basic investigations in the pathogenesis and treatment of liver diseases. The Division is comprised of eleven full-time faculty members, and nine clinical and research fellows, in addition to an extensive support staff. All members of the Division closely interact with many members of the Divisions of Gastroenterology and Transplantation Surgery, and the Department of Pathology. The faculty members provide consultative and inpatient services in medical hepatology and liver transplantation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. In addition, we provide outpatient services in the field of medical and transplantation hepatology and interventional endoscopy in the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation (NMFF) facility within Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The outpatient practices,  encompass both standard medical therapies and an extensive number of clinical trials for acute and chronic liver diseases.

The Division of Hepatology is committed to a rapidly expanding program in both basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis and therapy of liver disease. Members of the Division are currently funded by research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) , the American Association for the Study of Liver Disorders (AASLD), and from numerous pharmaceutical companies. Although the Division of Hepatology currently is one of the largest independent Divisions of Hepatology in the country, current plans include the rapid expansion and recruitment of additional clinical and research investigators. Collaborations with the Division of Transplant Surgery have resulted in a NIH Award to Northwestern University of a multicenter grant on Living-Related Liver Donor Transplantation. Northwestern University is the only Midwestern center to be awarded this grant, largely due to the extensive clinical experience in living-related donation.  There are close collaborative efforts with the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Children's Memorial Hospital, where faculty members in the Department of Pediatrics are actively involved in collaborative basic and clinical research studies, as well as clinical care of patients with liver disease.

The Fellowship Program is a joint program with the Division of Gastroenterology at the Feinberg School of Medicine. Fellows may enter a Clinical Track where the training emphasizes clinical patient care and research, or may enter the Research Track where the latter two years of the fellowship are devoted primarily to basic science research. Ikuo Hirano, MD, serves as the Fellowship Director. Research trainees have an opportunity to work within the laboratories of the Division of Hepatology members, as well as investigators in the Departments of Surgery, Pathology, Pediatrics, or the Basic Biomedical Sciences at Northwestern University. In addition, we encourage pre-doctoral students pursuing either a PhD or combined MD/PhD degrees to work in the laboratories.  There is also a fourth year advanced fellowship in Transplantation Hepatology, available to individuals who have completed a GI/Hepatology fellowship.  Dr. Josh Levitsky serves as the Fellowship Co-Director for this training program.

The Division of Hepatology provides clinical care and is actively involved in basic and clinical investigations of liver diseases. The diversity of the faculty's research initiatives and clinical expertise at Northwestern University provides an exceptional environment to train tomorrow's leaders of academic hepatology. In addition, the Division offers an intellectually stimulating environment for postgraduate medical and biomedical education in all facets of medical and transplantation hepatology. We welcome your consideration of the Division of Hepatology for your postgraduate, clinical, or research training, and collaborative investigations. We are delighted to answer any questions regarding our program and look forward to hearing from you.
