Feinberg Hospital Medicine Service

In any given week, there are a total of 9 hospitalists staffing the hospital medicine service. While these positions are interchangeable, each week the hospitalists are assigned to particular units for that week. If a physician has a particular interest in heart failure (HF) or short stay patients, that person may spend a majority of their time with the corresponding units.

Hospitalists assume care of new patients by either receiving handoffs of overnight admissions from nocturnists (night physicians) or new admissions. There are no specific “call” days over the course of the week; each hospitalist admits from 1 to 3 patients each day. The structure of this admitting scheme helps to ensure a manageable workload, and reduces the admitting burden for any individual hospitalist, especially in the event of a large number of patient admissions over a short period of time.

The Feinberg Hospital Medicine Service comprises the bulk of clinical care provided by the Division. This service now covers over 55% of the general medicine patients admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
