Short Stay Unit

The Short Stay Unit (SSU) was designed as a collaborative effort involving nursing, hospital administration and the hospitalists to provide highly efficient and high quality care to patients with an expected length of stay of less than 72 hours. This successful unit has consistently achieved impressive outcomes including shorter than expected length of stays, earlier discharge times, and high patient/physician and nursing satisfaction scores. Patients on the SSU commonly have diagnoses such as chest pain, syncope, cellulitis, asthma exacerbation, and dehydration consistent with their expected shorter length of stay.

The SSU is a 30 bed nursing unit with telemetry capability. It is staffed by two hospitalists, two care facilitators and a nurse practitioner, along with nurses, patient care technicians and a unit secretary. The two hospitalists and the nurse practitioner are responsible for the entire 30 beds on the unit.

Eric Schaefer, MD is the hospitalist leader of this floor. Please contact Eric for more information regarding SSU.
