Why did you chose Internal Medicine as a specialty?

- I have always enjoyed the complexity of all the different subspecialties and how they work together. General Medicine is unique in its ability to direct the interface. It is fascinating to me at all levels.

Tell us more about your background.

- I grew up in Naperville, Illinois and went to Cornell University for college. I meant my husband in medical school at Johns Hopkins and completed my residency at University of Chicago. I have been on faculty here since finishing my residency. I have two boys, Kiran, 6 and Soren, 5. They are great to be around and we love to travel with them.

What is it like to work for Northwestern?
-It is energizing and innovative. I enjoy the environment and love that my family is all around me - brother, husband, kids in daycare and parents who use the healthcare facility.

What motivates you to excel at work?
- Patient satisfaction. I am motivated by patients and families who look to the medical system for support. Some patients want me to figure out the diagnosis and some want a shoulder to lean on. Figuring out what someone needs and how to make them better has always been satisfying.
I am also motivated by my colleagues. It is great to work in a place with such amazing people. The group is dedicated, smart and witty.

What are your career goals for the upcoming years?
- To continue to provide optimal clinical care for our patients, teach the residents and students effectively and enjoy every day.

A Naperville, IL, native, Dr. Aarati Didwania is one of our best General Internal Medicine attendings. She graduated from Johns Hopkins Medical School and is currently an attending and a Junior Medicine site director. She is an accomplished physician and a happy wife and mother of two. She travels the world with her family (Turkey, China, Egypt, and India) and enjoys working on crafts with her kids and spending time with her close friends, listening to Indian music and watching Bollywood flicks. Dr. Didwania is an exceptional example of our faculty, a role model both at and outside of work.
