What does working at Northwestern mean to you?
NU has been a great place for me to continue to develop my clinical skills as it relates to patient care. All physicians within and outside of the DOM are very collegial. We really do practice "world class medicine." Also, NU has been a great place for me to develop skills as an educator. The people here (students, residents, physicians, ancillary staff, administration, & patients) are what I value most. I truly enjoy my interactions with the people.
What advice do you have for students and residents interested in hospital medicine?
Students and residents should choose programs that have a strong division of hospital medicine. There you will be able to foster relationships with leaders in this field. The field of hospital medicine is very young and there are many opportunities for research and quality improvement projects. With renewed focus on health care reform, research/projects that address quality and reducing costs will increase. If you can gain some experience working on quality improvement projects and research, you will be a highly attractive to any hospital medicine program.
Dr Mazyck is a very active member of the Department of Medicine Diversity Council. He was Northwestern’s representative at SNMA several times and also represented the DCAC during recruitment season. In 2008, he won a Department of Medicine Teaching award. Admired by his students and respected by his peers, Dr Mazyck is a true asset to Northwestern’s hospitalist staff.
