Elizabeth Apolonio, MD
Chief General Internal Medicine, Lakeside VA

Dr. Apolonio is a graduate of the Medical College of Ohio. She undertook both her internal medicine residency and fellowship training in infectious diseases at Northwestern. As Section Chief of General Internal Medicine at Lakeside VA, her primary role is Director of the VA General Medicine Clinics and Life Support Unit.  She is currently helping spearhead the implementation of Advanced Clinic Access at the Lakeside in order to improve patient access to their provider. Dr. Apolonio believes strongly in the benefits of practicing evidence-based medicine and is involved in the monitoring of several quality of care indicators within the VA's computerized patient record system.

Diane B. Wayne, MD
Associate Program Director

Dr. Wayne is the Dr. John Sherman Appleman Professor of Medicine and Vice-Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine. She was the program director 2001 to June 2012 and now is an associate program director. Dr. Wayne is a graduate of Northwestern’s Honors Program in Medical Education. She is a general internist. Her research interests include competency assessment and simulation-based education.

Dr. Wayne has received national awards for Medical Education research from the Association of Program Directors in Medical Education, the Society of General Internal Medicine and the American Association of Medical Colleges. She is a deputy editor of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Aashish K. Didwania, MD
Program Director

Aashish Didwania, MD graduated from Stanford University, then the University of Michigan Medical School, and completed his residency training at Northwestern. Dr. Didwania served as a chief medical resident, after which he joined the Division of General Internal Medicine where he has maintained a large primary care practice. He served as an Associate Program Director through 2012, winning many faculty awards for teaching in the areas of quality improvement, medical decision making, health care economics and cultural dynamics. Dr. Didwania’s research interests include professionalism, handoffs and simulation based education.

Jeffrey H. Barsuk
Hospitalist

Jeffrey H. Barsuk, MD, MS, FHM is an Associate Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He graduated AOA from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed a residency in Internal Medicine through the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was one of the first three hospitalists at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and helped to shape the development of that program which now includes close to 70 hospitalists. Recently, he completed a Masters Degree in Clinical Investigation. Currently, Dr. Barsuk is completing a certificate in healthcare quality and patient safety. As key clinical faculty in the residency program Dr. Barsuk uses simulation-based mastery learning to teach residents procedural skills. This training has been shown to positively impact patient care and outcomes.

John Butter, MD
Associate Program Director

Dr. Butter graduated from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, completed his residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and worked on the faculty at Dartmouth Medical School before returning to Northwestern in 1997. In addition to overseeing the ambulatory education for the residents, Dr. Butter is the Medical Director of the Clinical Education Center. He enjoys teaching at the bedside, working to enhance physical diagnosis skills and caring for challenging patients.

Vinky Chadha, MD
Associate Clerkship Director, Junior Medicine Clerkship

Dr. Chadha is a graduate of Northwestern's Honors Program in Medical Education and also completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern. He lends his considerable knowledge and experience to his role as Associate Program Director of the Junior Medicine Clerkship. His enthusiasm, knowledge and humor have made a popular mentor and a valuable resource for the residents. He is the recipient of the most Joost Teaching Awards, given by the Feinberg School of Medicine to their best clinical instructor.

Angelo Costas, MD

After completing residency and Chief Residency at Northwestern, Dr. Costas was asked to serve as one of our earliest Firm Chiefs. He currently practices general internal medicine, frequently attends on the inpatient wards and spends every Thursday taking morning report. Highly regarded for his broad knowledge base and exemplary rapport with patients and residents, he is a role model and mentor for our residents, especially those interested in careers in general internal medicine.

Nancy Dolan, MD
Co-Director, Women's Health Track

Dr. Dolan is a graduate of the University of Michigan Hospitals residency program in internal medicine.  She is currently co-director of the Women's Health track and a member of the Division of General Medicine.  As she also directs the ambulatory block rotation and has active research interests in ambulatory settings, Dr Dolan is uniquely qualified to oversee these important components of the residency program.

David B. Neely, MD
Director, Undergraduate Education

Clerkship Director, Junior Medicine Clerkship


Dr. Neely is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and Northwestern's residency program in internal medicine. He is an Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine. He splits his time between inpatient hospital medicine and a busy outpatient clinic. Dr. Neely is well-known to the residents as the clerkship director of the junior medicine clerkship. He also oversees the internal advising program for medical students.

Dan Evans, MD
Director, Medicine Subinternship

Dr. Evans came to Northwestern in 1996 as a first year medical student and has been happily here ever since, staying on as a chief medical resident in '03-'04.  He is currently a faculty member in the division of General Internal Medicine and splits his time equally between hospital medicine and outpatient practice.  Being a "hybrid" hospitalist/generalist, he has a special interest in studying transitions of care and discharge safety.  Dr. Evans is also well known to many residents in his capacity as the clerkship director for 4th year medical sub-interns.

Robert Hirschtick, MD
Deputy Chief, Medicine Service, Jesse Brown VA
Associate Clerkship Director, Junior Medicine Clerkship

Dr. Hirschtick is a faculty member in the division of General Internal Medicine and the Director of the Third Year clerkship in Medicine at the VA hospital. His area of clinical interest is HIV medicine. Dr. Hirschtick is an astute clinician and a wonderful teacher and mentor to both students and residents. In 2009, he was inducted to the Department’s teaching hall of fame after being recognized year after year by senior residents as being a tremendous teacher and mentor.

David Liebovitz, MD
Associate Program Director

Dr. Liebovitz completed his residency training at the University of Chicago where he worked as a clinician educator until 2002. Dr. Liebovitz is currently the Medical Director for Clinical Information Systems at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and serves as the informatics liaison for the Department of Medicine working to streamline operations for housestaff and maximize their learning opportunities.

Stevie Mazyck, MD
Division of Hospital Medicine

Dr. Mazyck is a full time faculty member in the Division of Hospital Medicine. He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina. He tremendously enjoys his role as a Hospitalist. Since his chief resident year, he has been actively involved in the education of medical residents and students. He serves as a course director for the Clinical Skills Course for second year medical students and co-chair of the DOM Diversity and Cultural Affairs Council. Dr. Mazyck enjoys working with students and residents at all levels of training; he volunteers his time working with students in a community free health clinic.

Arvydas Vanagunas, MD
Former Chief of Staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Dr. Vanagunas served his residency and fellowship in gastroenterology at Northwestern. As an active sub-specialist within the division of Gastroenterology, he maintains his roots in internal medicine. He has been a leader in resident education during the weekly, dynamic Firm Conference and as a sub-specialist role model on consult rotations.

Warren Wallace, MD
Associate Program Director

A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Wallace developed an interest in general internal medicine while a resident and chief resident at Northwestern. As a member of the Division of General Internal Medicine, he emphasizes the central role of the general internist in coordinating the patient's care. Dr. Wallace brings an emphasis on continuity of care and close working relationships among attending staff members, patients, and residents to the clinical service. In addition he encourages critical thinking in forums such as Resident Board Review and Morning Report.
