Douglas E. Vaughan, MD: Chairman

Douglas E. Vaughan MD is the Irving Cutter Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Northwestern. He has been the Department Chairman since June 2008. Dr Vaughan is an accomplished physician-scientist. His laboratory studies the fibrinolytic system at the molecular and cellular level. Murine models are used to characterize the tissue specific expression of PAI-1 in response to pathophysiologic stimuli. Hypothesis driven clinical studies are also performed to confirm basic findings and to establish physiological relevance in vivo. Dr. Vaughan has received many awards and honors and is a fellow in the American College of Cardiology. He has been elected to membership in the organizations that recognize leading physician-scientists, including the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI), and the Association of American Physicians (AAP). He has co-authored more than 150 journal articles and serves on the editorial boards of Circulation, Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, and Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

Gary J. Martin, MD: Vice Chair Faculty Affairs

Dr. Martin is the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs for the Department of Medicine and the Raymond J. Langenbach Professor of Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease and serves as an Attending Physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Dr. Martin received his B.A. in Psychology and M.D. from the University of Illinois. He completed an Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and then served as a Chief Medical Resident and Coordinator of Inpatient Care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Subsequently he completed a Cardiology Fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center. Dr. Martin returned to Northwestern in 1984 and has served as the Division Chief for General Internal Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine for 13 years before becoming a Vice Chair. During that period he lead many successfully funded fellowship and faculty development programs which generated scores of academicians that serve as faculty members today. He has received numerous awards and honors including the Robert J. Winter Outstanding Teacher in Primary Care and “Best Doctors” recognitions. Dr. Martin has been deeply involved in our ambulatory electronic medical record deployment since 1995 and related clinical information technology initiatives. His research interests include clinical epidemiology, health services research and research in medical education. He is currently a “college mentor” for the class of 2013 helping oversee the professional growth of 43 medical students.

James Foody, MD: Vice Chair Clinical Affairs

Dr. Foody earned his MD at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and subsequently completed training in internal medicine at the University of Chicago. After completing a practice obligation with the National Health Service Corps, he returned to join the faculty of the University of Chicago for 15 years. In 2001, he moved to the faculty of the Feinberg School of Medicine, and advanced to the rank of Professor in 2006. Dr. Foody led the revision of inpatient medical services at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was instrumental in creating the Division of Hospital Medicine. He maintains a substantial effort commitment devoted to quality improvement and safety. He has chaired the NMH Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee since 2001, leading a complete restructuring of the organization and function of the committee.

Active in the American College of Physicians, Dr. Foody was elected governor for the ACP Illinois Northern chapter in 2007. He is active in national ACP as vice chairperson of the Membership Committee and as a member of the Chapters Subcommittee.
 

Diane B. Wayne, MD: Vice Chair Education

Diane B. Wayne, MD is the Dr. John Sherman Appleman Professor of Medicine and Vice-Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine. She served as the program director from 2001 - June 2012 (learn more about Northwestern Internal Medicine Residency Program). Dr. Wayne is a graduate of Northwestern’s Honors Program in Medical Education. She is a general internist. Her research interests include competency assessment and simulation-based education.

Dr. Wayne has received national awards for Medical Education research from the Association of Program Directors in Medical Education, the Society of General Internal Medicine and the American Association of Medical Colleges. She is a deputy editor of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Wayne received the 2010 Parker Palmer Courage to Teach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
 

Robert O. Bonow, MD: Vice Chair Development and Innovation

Dr. Robert O. Bonow is the Goldberg Distinguished Professor of Cardiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He served as Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital from 1992 to 2011. In 2008 he was named Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Innovation. He has authored or co-authored more than 410 published papers and 100 book chapters. He serves on the editorial boards of 10 medical journals, and is one of the four principal editors of Braunwald’s Heart Disease: A Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine. Among his honors are the NIH Director's Award, the U.S. Public Health Service Commendation Medal and Outstanding Service Medal, and elected membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Fellowship Award and Distinguished Service Award of the American College of Cardiology; the Distinguished Leadership Award, Distinguished Achievement Award, Gold Heart Award, and James B. Herrick Award of the American Heart Association; and the John Phillips Memorial Award of the American College of Physicians.
