Northwestern University’s Internal Medicine Residency Journal Article Reviews (NU JAR) represents a new addition to the efforts of our outstanding residents from the class of 2012. We began this publication 1 year ago, at the start of their second year, with the idea of improving knowledge and skills in Evidence Based Medicine. Specifically in the area of critically reviewing the literature and academic writing in the form of writing a review.

Over the course of the year, residents reviewed recent articles of high-impact with a few choosing a classic article from the last ten years. Articles were reviewed in the context of Patient-Oriented Evidence that Matters, or a POEM. Dr. Nita Kulkarni, from the Division of Hospital Medicine and a POEM expert, provided instruction and through collaborative efforts, Hospitalist attendings served as one-to-one editors on each review.

There might not be a busier time than the second year of residency; adjusting to the role of being a senior resident, applying for fellowships and doing research. Adding on one additional task to the year isn’t easy, but residents found the process educational, and give us this great review of the literature.

We thank the mentors for their dedication to education and the residents for their excellence.
