Interventional Cardiology Fellowship
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine’s Interventional Cardiology Training Program is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program within the Division of Cardiology. There are a total of two positions in our program, which spans July 1 to June 30 of each year.
About the Fellowship
Education
Our catheterization laboratory averages about 1,200 interventional procedures each year. Fellows participate in pre-procedural planning, including the indications for the procedure and the selection of the appropriate procedure or instruments, and perform the critical technical manipulations of the procedure.
Clinical Experience
Twelve months are devoted entirely for inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences. Specifically, our fellows achieve exposure and competency in the following areas:
- Diagnostic coronary, peripheral and pulmonary angiography
- Percutaneous coronary, peripheral and pulmonary intervention
- Adjunctive atherectomy techniques including rotation, orbital and laser atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy
- Adjunctive thrombectomy devices
- Intravascular imaging and hemodynamic assessment
- Transcatheter valve intervention including implantations, repair and valvuloplasty in the aortic, mitral, tricuspid and pulmonic positions
- Adult congenital heart disease including PFO, ASD, PDA and VSD closure
- Placement and removal of temporary mechanical circulatory support devices
The Division of Cardiology has a weekly clinical and research conference. The interventional cardiology fellow is expected to present clinical cases and recent literature.
Research
In addition to a strong clinical program, Northwestern Interventional Cardiology fellows are expected to participate in a wide variety of research projects, from basic/translational to clinical research.
Eligibility
Applicants must be currently enrolled in or have completed an ACGME-accredited general Cardiology fellowship in order to apply. Further qualifications for the interventional cardiology fellowship are reflected in the Core Cardiology Training and Adult Cardiovascular Medicine Document (COCATS).
Fellows will require level 2 certification during their general cardiology fellowship. Level 3 is designed for trainees who receive both diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization training.
The fellows will have completed a minimum of eight months over a three-year period in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, including participation in performance of a minimum of 300 diagnostic cardiac catheterizations.
Fellows should be board-eligible for cardiovascular disease and secure full medical licensure in the state of Illinois prior to starting their interventional cardiology fellowship training.
If applicable, applicants must possess a valid visa and ECFMG certification.
