Complex and High Risk Coronary Intervention (CHIP) Fellowship
The Complex and High-Risk Coronary Intervention (CHIP) Fellowship at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine is a one-year fellowship that is not accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The fellowship provides advanced training in complex coronary and chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
The fellowship provides extensive hands-on experience in complex and high-risk PCI, with a major focus on CTO revascularization using contemporary antegrade and retrograde techniques.
Training also includes:
- Complex left main and bifurcation PCI
- Treatment of calcified coronary disease
- Advanced intracoronary imaging and physiology
- Mechanical circulatory support
- Prevention and management of complex PCI complications
The goal of the fellowship is to develop independent, technically skilled and thoughtful complex coronary operators prepared to perform complex and CTO PCI and to develop successful complex coronary programs at their future institutions.
About the Fellowship
Education & Research Experience
Fellows participate in dedicated complex coronary and CTO conferences with an emphasis on patient selection, procedural planning, technical strategy and review of outcomes. Fellows are also encouraged to participate in clinical research, quality improvement, education and scholarly activities with mentorship from Northwestern faculty.

- Duration: 12 months
- Program Type: Non-ACGME-accredited advanced fellowship
- Prerequisite Training: Completion of a cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology fellowship training
- Start Date: July 1
- Positions: One fellow per year
- Location: Northwestern Medicine, Chicago, Illinois
Eligibility
Fellowship requirements include:
- Completion of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship training or international equivalent, per guidelines set forth by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)
- Completion of ACGME-accredited Interventional Cardiology Fellowship training or the international equivalent, per ABIM guidelines
- ABIM board certification or board eligibility
- Must secure full Illinois State Medical License prior to July 1
- If applicable, applicants must also possess a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification and secure the appropriate visa sponsorship

- USMLE/COMPLEX Transcript with Step 1, 2 and 3 scores
- ABIM Board Certificate
- ECFMG Certificate (if applicable)
- One letter of recommendation from a cardiovascular disease program director
- Two letters of recommendation from cardiologists familiar with the candidate's work
