David M Shapiro

Assistant Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

I perform primary and secondary endoscopic (non-surgical) therapies for obesity, including placement of the Orbera gastric balloon, the Aspire Assist device and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty. I also perform gastro-jejunal outlet reduction for weight regain after bariatric surgery. I have also been trained to use the EsophyX device (TIF procedure) as a minimally invasive (non-surgical) treatment for GERD. I am also interested in endoscopic treatment of post-surgical complications and endoscopic suturing.

Rachel M Cyrus

Associate Professor of Medicine (Hospital Medicine)

Rachel has been the Clinical Practice Director for the Division of Hospital Medicine at Northwestern since 2012. Her current roles include Key Medical Director for General Medicine, co-chair of the Department of Medicine Quality Management Committee, and Quality and Safety Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. At the national level, Rachel has served on the Society of Hospital Medicine Practice Management Committee and has spoken on teamwork and interdisciplinary rounding. Our laboratory utilizes DNA sequencing, gene expression profiling, proteomic analyses, flow cytometric methodology and many other basic techniques to pursue goals that are ultimately translatable for improving health and overall survival in patients with brain cancer. Although our research is primarily focused on malignant glioma, with a special emphasis on glioblastoma, we are also interested in pursuing incurable pediatric brain tumors, as well as metastatic tumors that invade the brain/spinal cord.
